March 8, 2017. As celebration of International Woman's Day, women all over the world joined together in a strike. The strike is one of the many events that followed the International Woman's March that took place the day after Donald Trump was elected president. The strike demanded the end of gender violence, equal labor rights, and reproductive justice for all.
Levels of engagement in the strike could vary from attending local rallies, taking a day off work and laborious activity, sharing an image in social media, or by simply wearing red. The goal was create solidarity and to deliver the message that January's march was just the beginning. In New York City, thousands gathered in 5th and 59th for the strike's rally, where feminist leaders took a stand against recent retroactive government policies in the fight for gender equality. The turnout was way less that the Woman's March, which organizers knew would happen as the momentum of the election has lessened since. Nevertheless, there rally had a vibrating energy equal to none.
The rally protested a wide range of social issues through a feminist lens. The controversial political climate has kindled activist actions by many minority groups, minorities which women belong to. It was inevitable for these concerns not to be addressed, and the strike for gender equality became a fight for equality, period. Each woman has her own voice, her own life and concerns that she wishes to express. It is a beautiful thing to see immigrants, blacks, latinos, muslims, gays, queers, transgenders, and all these different minorities come together under one word: woman. The fight for gender equality continues, and the retaliation against the political climate will surely continue to stand. Minorities will continue to fight for the merging together of social stratifications until we can all join under one word: human.
